Autumn Flowers London: What’s in Season Right Now (October 2026)

What Flowers Are in Season in London This October?

October is when the flower calendar shifts properly. The last of the summer stems are gone, and what replaces them is richer, deeper, and altogether more interesting — burnt oranges, dark burgundies, velvet textures and the kind of colour that looks its best by candlelight or against a dark wall.

If you’ve been buying the same roses all year, autumn is the season that gives you a reason to try something different. Here’s exactly what’s at its best right now, and what we’re working with at our Chelsea and Mayfair studios this month.

The Autumn Palette: What to Expect in October

Autumn floristry isn’t just about colour — it’s about texture. The flowers that come into their own between October and November tend to have more visual weight than spring and summer blooms. Velvet petals, spiked sculptural heads, trailing foliage in turning shades. A good autumn bouquet feels fuller and more layered than its summer equivalent, even at the same stem count.

The colour range this month runs from warm apricot and rose pink at one end, through burnt orange and amber in the middle, to deep burgundy, plum and claret at the other. You can work with the whole spectrum in one arrangement, or lean hard into one end — the richly dark or the warmly coloured.

Flowers in Season Now at Petals London

Free Spirit Roses
One of the defining roses of the autumn palette. Free Spirit is an apricot-toned garden rose with a ruffled, full-petalled head — warmer than a classic cream and more interesting than a standard orange. It works beautifully in mixed arrangements because it sits comfortably alongside both the lighter and darker stems of the season. You’ll find it in three of our four autumn bouquets this month.

Celosia
If you haven’t worked with celosia before, October is the time to start. It comes in two forms — the cockscomb type, with its brain-like, velvety ridge, and the plume type, which gives feathery, vertical height. Both are exceptional in autumn arrangements. The colour range runs from deep burgundy and claret through to burnt orange and flame red, and the velvet texture adds depth that you simply can’t get from petals alone. Vase life is long too — celosia holds well for up to two weeks with proper care.

Pincushion Protea (Nutans)
The Nutans pincushion protea is one of the most architecturally interesting flowers available in autumn. Its spiked, domed head adds structure and a slightly wild quality to any arrangement — it’s the stem that stops people and makes them ask what it is. The variety we’re working with this month sits in the amber-bronze range, which places it perfectly in the centre of the autumn palette.

Calla Lilies (Orange and Burgundy)
Calla lilies are available year-round, but the seasonal colourways in autumn — deep orange, burnt amber, burgundy — are the ones that feel genuinely at home. Their smooth, glossy surface provides a clean contrast against the textured stems of the season. A single burgundy calla in a dark bouquet has the same effect as a well-chosen accent colour in a room: it makes everything around it look considered.

Our Autumn Collection This October

Everything above goes into the four bouquets we’ve designed specifically for this season. Each one is hand-tied at our Chelsea studio by our Master Florists and available in three sizes.

Autumn in Chelsea — From £95
A warm, garden-gathered arrangement of Free Spirit and Silva Pink roses, kangaroo paw, crocosmia, snapdragons, clematis and lisianthus. Apricot, rose pink, amber and burgundy — the full autumn spectrum in one bouquet.

Autumn in Bloom — From £95
Built from the richest end of the autumn palette: burnt orange, amber and deep burgundy. Free Spirit roses, Nutans pincushion protea, orange calla lilies, celosia and autumn eucalyptus. A generous, saturated arrangement for anyone who wants their flowers to make a statement.

Chelsea After Dark — From £95
Burgundy, claret and plum — the moodiest bouquet in the collection. Bigoudi chrysanthemum, burgundy calla lilies, carnations, celosia, hydrangea and hypericum berries, set against dark green foliage. For people who like their flowers rich and dramatic rather than soft.

Midnight Velvet — From £95
The most textural bouquet we make this season. Antique hydrangea, velvet celosia, Free Spirit roses, snapdragons, clematis, scabious and lisianthus in a deep mix of burgundy, plum and burnt orange with touches of lilac. Wild, layered, and nothing too polished.

How to Make Autumn Flowers Last Longer

The cooler temperatures of October actually work in your favour here. Flowers last longer in a cool room than in the warmth of summer — but there are still a few things worth doing to get the full vase life from your arrangement.

Re-cut the stems as soon as they arrive. A 45-degree cut with sharp scissors opens up the stem and immediately improves water uptake. Do this before you put them in a vase.

Use lukewarm water, not cold. Most cut flowers absorb lukewarm water more readily than cold. Fill the vase with room temperature water and add your flower food sachet if one is included.

Keep them away from radiators. October is when central heating comes back on, and a vase sitting next to a radiator will dramatically shorten the vase life of any arrangement. A hallway, dining room or kitchen away from direct heat is ideal.

Change the water every two to three days. Bacteria in vase water is the single biggest cause of early wilting. Fresh water every couple of days, with a re-cut of the stems at the same time, can add days to the life of an autumn bouquet.

With proper care, most of our autumn bouquets will last seven to ten days.
